Synopsis
The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of injuries and preventive measures amongst elite volleyball players in Yaounde, Cameroon. For the present study, injuries to players during the 2014-2015 season, were registered by using a modified standard questionnaire on 100 volleyball players in the different elite volleyball clubs in Yaounde. A response rate of 96% was obtained, but 91% of players sustained one or more injuries where 123 injuries reported. Injuries prevalence was higher amongst male players 51.3% than female players 48.7%. Amongst the injured players, fingers (24.8%) showed the highest injury prevalence, followed by ankle (21.1%).Most injuries (55.6%) during training and 63.3% during matches were classified as being of minor severity. 71.3% of injuries occurred during training, and 9.8% of the overall injuries had a gradual onset.41.2% of injuries to the males and 32.6% of injuries to the females that could be related to a specific court situation occurred during blocking, and 27.5% of injuries to the males and 18.6% of injuries to the females of injuries occurred during spiking. Most players (94.8%) participated in injury prevention training (strength training, plyometrics and technique drills), generally performed with supervision (86.7%). The study revealed 36.6% of ankle injury prevalence with players who got injured in contact.Players in the left and right front row were more prone to be injured during blocking (41.2%) for males and 32.6% for females, followed by spiking (27.5%) for males and 18.6% for females.Awareness programs highlighting prevention strategies and physiotherapy intervention are required for coaches and players of Yaounde, Cameroon Clubs to assist in the prevention of volleyball injuries
